Fearing outbreak of epidemics, residents of New Colony in Batamaloo made a fervent plea to the Srinagar Muncipal Corporation (SMC) to intervene and set right the drainage system in their locality.
Locals of the area told Good Morning Kashmir that most of the damaged and defunct drains in the locality are choked making it impossible for residents tomove in the locality.
“For years now the authorities have been applying temporary measures to repair the drainage system on a temporary basis, but they have failed to find a long time solution,” said a local
The locals said that due to the unavailability of a proper drainage system, the area gets water-logged frequently.
“We have been facing the issue for a long and during every downpour, there is water-logging in the area. We are unable to venture out due to waterlogging, we are so frustrated that if we attempt to sell our properties, no one wants to buy them after seeing the condition of the area,” said Altaf Ahmad, a local.
Locals alleged that the water that has flooded this area originates from Solina, Firdousabad, Bonpora, Rekchowk, Bazar Mohalla, SD colony, Gulab colony, and Bemina.
“It’s more troublesome for sick and people having respiratory problems. The drains are clogged with the remains of dogs, calves, and old clothing. It has totally blocked the drain. The water level in the colonies and alleys is around two feet high,” said Mudasir Ahmad, a local resident.
“Despite a number of reminders to the concerned authorities, it looks that our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” they said, adding that City Mayor also visited the area two months back, but nothing has been done since than.
“We urge the concerned authorities to construct the drainage system at the earliest,” they added.
