The counting of votes will begin today at 8 am thus marking the end of the biggest election process ever held in the world. More than 540 constituencies spread across the length and breadth of the seventh largest land-wise country in the world is no mean feat. India has the highest population of all the countries in the world and to carry out a peaceful election here is indeed a great achievement. The Election Commission of India ( ECI) needs to be congratulated for meticulously arranging everything and setting up an example for other countries about holding elections in a peaceful manner in a country otherwise having unmanageable fault lines of caste, religion, and ethnicity.
The ECI held the highest principles of equality, liberty, and fraternity in the highest esteem while delivering their duties in this election. It is not easy to maintain impartiality and transparency in an environment where conflicting interests and ideologies clash ceaselessly. But as it appears ECI has done a fine job.
The irony is that many ECI officials died in the line of duty due to excessive heat. An adequate compensation must be provided to the next kith and kin of those who died while serving the biggest democracy of the world. However, for the next general election, it must be borne in mind that May and April may not be the smart choices of months to hold elections. The hot and humid conditions prevalent during those two months cab wreak havoc with the help of people.
Despite a few groundless accusations the ECI has maintained the highest possible discipline and rigorous efforts are maintaining transparency. They have condemned the speeches that warranted condemnation and maintained silence where silence was the best answer. From sweltering plains to the highest polling station of the world, the compliance was up to the mark. Well done Election Commission of India!
