Democracy is a wonder of the modern world. The countries which are run on democratic principles have stable governments and are ahead in race in as far as becoming welfare states are concerned. Democratic countries like United States of America (USA), United Kingdom( UK), France, Germany and Holland believe in Participative democracy wherein every citizen gets a right to chose his representative in the government to convey his/her aspirations in the socio-economic sphere of the country. Progressive democracies entail a steady race towards becoming a welfare state ensuring the benefits of governance reaches out to everyone involved.
The two phases of the general central elections in India got completed today amid much fanfare. A good percentage of voters participated in these two rounds and one can hope that in the remaining four to five rounds of elections voters retain this enthusiasm. This is a sign of a healthy democracy that people joyfully participate in the elections. It is the privacy of the voting booth that entails the core concept of democracy. India is indeed the biggest of all democracies.
Regarding adverse weather forecast for the upcoming week it remains to be seen whether Election Commission of India will accept the appeal made by a few parties to postpone elections for Anantnag Rajauri parliamentary seat in view of the inclement weather predictions. While this appeal has snowballed into a bit of a controversy as other political parties feel the relevant departments should be able to keep Mughal road open in ending April no matter how bad the weather.
We are hopeful that ECI would take a right decision in this regard. The high percentage of voting in the Jammu region needs to be emulated in the Kashmir region for the successful completion of this democratic process.
One should congratulate the Election Commission of India for successfully completing the first two rounds of elections in India.
