Presently one profession seems to be vogue and sought after is journalism. Since the internet availability became free for all, the sizable population of younger Kashmiris have been choosing this so-called lucrative and glamourized profession. Journalists or reporters till the recent past were respectable people in any society, but the advent of social media and its vast reach has made it a laughing stock. The majority of boys, as well as girls, feel proud while introducing themselves as self-styled journos. These youngsters can be seen in Press Enclave in large numbers roaming around carrying Mike logos of social media pages. It is said that Rs 1000 is enough for any boy or girl to qualify as a journo whatever his or her educational qualification. The ever-increasing number of these journos most of them being school dropouts or semi-literates is becoming a menace. Surprisingly, every one of them introduce themselves as Mass Comm postgraduates without knowing the meaning of the degree. Every now and then these days there is some controversy created by these so-called newpersons by their non-professional videos which are meant to gather maximum viewership only. What kind of negative impact these senseless videos have on the people, they are not concerned. Some time ago, the administration announced that no self-styled media platform or self-projected journos will be allowed to operate without fulfilling norms and qualifications but the plan never took off giving the unscrupulous elements the license to kill. It is high time for the authorities to put some checks and balances for alarming mushroom growth. They have been the main reason for the headaches and nuisances for the people
