Jammu and Kashmir is known for clean and fresh water bodies. It is the largest source of water supply all over India. With the end of the winter season, the frozen rivers and lakes start melting and quench the thirst of millions of people. Despite plentiful resources like streams, lakes, and rivers, people in villages, towns, and cities are drinking contaminated water for a very long time. In the past times, the water was drinkable and crystal clear. It had no smell because pure water was supplied to the people. At present times, people are continuously drinking unhygienic water which has impacted their overall health. Pesticides which are used for agricultural land purposes mix into the water bodies, therefore, running off into lakes and rivers making the water infected. Now that spring season has come farmers will use more chemicals in paddy fields and spray the fruit orchards and the vegetable farms. It happens every year and again causes various health issues. This is a non-ending process until the concerned authorities come forward to educate farmers about the side effects of using chemicals. We stand with the farmers association only if they don’t use too much fertilizers to grow the vegetation that can make more people sick in the near future. Animal and human waste products are being thrown into the river sites. It is shameful that mothers are flinging the diapers of their toddlers into the water bodies. In spite of dumping the garbage, the public is deliberately polluting water. Thousands of people in the valley are drinking the infected water. The chemicals in water are so strong that it tastes like medicine. They have to drink water every day because they have no other option. People want to drink pure water so that they don’t catch water-borne diseases. If these issues are taken for granted it can cause disease and even death. We hope that the concerned authorities will intervene in this matter so that the common people don’t have to drink unsafe water.
