There is a famous proverb “Dig a well before the house catches fire”. Sensible and foresighted persons adopt this philosophy in their lives to avoid any loss. The tragic incident that occurred at Gandbal, Batwara left everyone in deep shock. As per the immediate reactions from the locals, this dreadful incident happened due to the incompletion of the footbridge that has been lingering for a long time. The pending construction work may be restored in the future, and the bridge will be established. But the irreparable damage done by it will have a long impact on the psyche of all especially those who lost
their loved ones.
Whatever may be the reasons for this prolonged delay? Now, it is high time to take a lesson from this heart-wrenching incident and to bring positive changes in our approach. We should prioritize our public works or projects that have a direct bearing on the safety and security of the general public.
No matter which party, agency, or department initiated any work or project, our collective efforts should be to complete it within the stipulated time without any hindrance. A significant number of public works – construction or widening of roads, bridges retaining walls, and proper alignment of High Tension Lines near human habitation or schools are pending for one reason or the other.
Such pending works for a long time ultimately cause severe damage in terms of human loss or infrastructure. We chalk out means and ways to overcome the hindrance but it is too late then.
To prevent such incidents in the future, we have to avoid this Chalta Ha attitude. Let the civil societies, and media change their approach. It is better to highlight any issues of public importance before it will become the shocking news of the day as – Gandbal News. Had it been highlighted before, such incidents would not have happened.
Regarding this particular incident, we as commoners can do prayers in favor of the departed souls and their families. May Almighty Allah bless eternal peace to departed souls and patience to bereaved families!
