The holy month of Ramadhan is about to end and the season of festivity called Eid-ul-fitr will begin shortly marking a reward for those who steadfastly observed fast during the divine month. Ramadhan is said to be the holiest of all months in the Islamic calendar and a deed of charity or piety done in this month promises a reward which is multiple times as supposed to the same deed committed in other months.
Muslims all across the world are supposed to observe a predawn to dusk fast during all this of this month. Besides Muslims are supposed to do a lot of charity in this month, curtail hours of hard labour of their employees, treat animals with care, not to scold or abuse anyone and be patient with trying circumstances.
However, is the real spirit of Ramadhan being followed in letter and spirit, one wonders? There still are poor who go hungry to bed in millions during this pious month of Ramadhan. Thousands who cannot afford medical expenditure for their ailments. Millions who despite possessing the relevant educational qualification find it hard to find their first job. Millions who have reached the age of forty or fifty but still cannot get married. Have we utterly failed to follow the spirit of Islam which instructs us to inspect forty surrounding homes for hungry stomachs before having your supper? Where has that spirit gone?
Humanism is the core of any religious doctrine. We must not lose track of humanity and humanism at all costs. Creating a welfare state is a duty of each and every citizen.
May this Eid bring unlimited joys in our lives. May the pain and agony of helpless and poor lessen. May this Eid bring a message of peace , prosperity and joy.
