Why daughters are not getting married? Why parents are fighting inner battles with themselves these days? Why these questions are arising? The answer to all these questions is the existence of a dowry system in society and the irresponsible behavior of people in our society. It is quite shocking that even in the 21st century the so-called modern man is hungry to gain materialistic possessions from women. Millions of weddings take place every year in India but no one exactly knows the struggle of parents to make them happen. Dowry in form of jewelry, cash, or goods is paid to the bridegroom’s family and then only their daughter is accepted. The families put extreme pressure on their sons to only marry when their demands are fulfilled. Some men understand that it is a crime while others ask for it because they are still following the traditional viewpoint. The daughter’s family takes risks by borrowing a huge amount of money for dowry purposes. Later on, when the daughter is married, in-laws begin to torture her every day by saying”Leave the house or bring money from your parent’s house. The daughters get used to taunts of dowry every single day. Even she keeps the prestige of her family by not sharing the oppression from in-laws. This is the point where her life becomes a danger. However, she tries to arrange some money but when it continues on an everyday basis she quits. The time she fails to bring dowry from her house, the in-laws start bashing her. The husband along with his family plans to murder her. They strangle her to death. Some give poison and the others burn her alive. Recently we have been hearing news related to dowry murders. This is what women need to pay attention to. They must be much more alert in choosing their life partners. It is a red flag for all women if their man is materialistic and greedy. A marriage is a bond and an agreement between two people who accept each other for what they are. Marriage is neither a demand nor greed. It is to settle your world with someone who is there for you in pleasure and pain. In our valley also, there are countless unfortunate women who are still unmarried because of dowry issues. From an Islamic perspective, it halts the growth of the population which is a loss to the nation. The family can’t afford marriage expenses so the daughter prefers sitting at home and spending the rest of her life without a partner. That is why one needs to give good education to their daughters so that they know about their rights well and they are worthy enough to raise their voices against the prevalent evils of society. Nowadays some youngsters are understanding that dowry is a curse. The men folk must realize that one day they are going to be fathers of daughters too so it is their responsibility to make marriages easy for the woman’s family. If the parents want to gift something to their daughters they can but in a good way without pressure. It is so heartwrenching that the so-called educated men also demand dowry. Isn’t it a shame for society? These men have no respect for themselves. The male is said to be a breadwinner, no doubt women also earn these days but a man must be strong that he can fulfill his desires by working hard and not by living on women’s money. The Government must put these people behind bars who try to violate the laws and punishment must be extended for those who try to spread this evil.
