Wular Lake which is considered to be one of the world’s largest sources of fresh water is set to get a major facelift which once completed can help it get tourists by thousands and change it into one of the most favorite touristy places in the whole of Kashmir valley. Effectively aimed at boosting tourism, the Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) has redoubled efforts to give Wular Lake a major facelift reminiscent of the iconic Boulevard of Dal Lake in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a news that sounds music to ears, the Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) has set up a comprehensive plan to attract tourists to the beautiful scenery of Asia’s largest natural lake, while the main objective of this project is to ensure the preservation of the natural beauty of the lake.
Wular Lake has the potential to become the number one tourism destination in the whole Kashmir valley as the sheer enormity of this lake can awe any prospective tourists. But the remoteness of the lake coupled with the lack of basic amenities hamper the footfall of tourists in this north Kashmir Lake. Wular can also be promoted as an ace angling hotspot as the quality and variety of fish found in this lake is quite good. This lake gives a perfect view of the surrounding mountains.
The government must ensure that while Wular Lake is promoted as a top tourism destination at the same time due care is taken of the ecology of the region. Over-tourism and uncontrolled footfall can ruin the beauty of the place. No one certainly wants to wake up with photographs of beer bottles floating on the surface of water. There is a need to organize guided tours with professional guides showing tourists around the most beautiful regions of the vast lake.
There is also a worry about the evening winds which have the potential to overthrow small boats. Carrying life jackets in this case should be made mandatory for all boat owners. This part of north Kashmir has a mystery attached to it. No one should be allowed to play with the beauty of the place. At the same time, we can organically develop this place as a top-notch guided tour destination where only serious tourists visit for a great experience.
