The AMU Court, the supreme governing body of the university, has recommended a panel of three names, including Prof. Rabbani, to the President of India as the potential picks for the next Vice-Chancellor. During the meeting, attended by 84 members, Prof. Rabbani secured 61 votes, demonstrating strong support from the university community.
Amidst the decision-making process, certain political considerations have come to light. With the Hon’ble President of India and Union Education Minister belonging to Odisha, the decision to choose a female candidate from the same state could be seen as an effort to avoid potential backlash. Such nuanced considerations showcase a thoughtful approach to maintain regional balance.
While Prof. Faizan Mustafa and Prof. Naima Gulrez (wife of Prof Mohammad Gulrez, the officiating Vice-Chancellor of AMU) were also in contention, Prof. Rabbani’s substantial support from the university community positions him as a formidable candidate. Prof. Mustafa’s recent appointment as VC at Chanakya National Law University, Patna Bihar coupled with his public stance on contentious issues, might have influenced the decision-making process.
Earlier in a pivotal development, the Aligarh Muslim University Court convened a special meeting to determine the potential candidates for the esteemed position of Vice-Chancellor. The court forwarded a panel of three names – Prof Muzaffar Uruj Rabbani (M U Rabbani), former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at AMU; Prof Faizan Mustafa, currently serving as the Vice-Chancellor at Chanakya National Law University, Patna, and also a Professor at the Department of Law at AMU; and Prof Naima Khatoon Gulrez, an esteemed Professor of Psychology at AMU, holding the position of Principal at Women’s College, AMU.
This significant recommendation was then communicated to the Visitor, President Droupadi Murmu, who holds the pivotal role in appointing the next Vice-Chancellor. The Aligarh Muslim University Court, as the supreme governing body, showcased its authority in this selection process.
During the meeting, which saw the participation of 84 members, Prof Mohammad Gulrez, the officiating Vice-Chancellor, presided over the proceedings. Naseem Ahmad, a former AMU Vice-Chancellor, assumed the role of Chief Election Officer to conduct the election. The voting results revealed that Prof M U Rabbani secured an impressive 61 votes, while Prof Mustafa and Prof Khatoon garnered 53 and 50 votes, respectively. Additionally, Prof Furqan Qamar and Prof Qayyum Husain, part of the initial panel of five names drawn by the Executive Council of the University on October 30, secured 45 and 43 votes.
The entire electoral process was meticulously orchestrated by AMU Registrar Mohammad Imran (IPS), who extended a vote of thanks after conducting the proceedings. This culmination of the selection process has intensified the focus on Prof Rabbani, who emerges as the leading candidate poised to assume the role of Vice-Chancellor at AMU. As the most personalized figure for the post, Prof Rabbani’s potential appointment is anticipated with keen interest and scrutiny. His substantial support in the voting process underscores his standing within the university community, positioning him on the cusp of assuming a pivotal leadership role at AMU.
As the focus shifts to Prof. M. U. Rabbani, the prospect of him becoming the Vice Chancellor of AMU looms large. His extensive experience, academic contributions, and overwhelming support from the university community make him a compelling choice.
The decision not only aligns with his credentials but also factors in the complex dynamics of regional representation and political considerations. Prof. M U Rabbani’s potential appointment holds the promise of ushering in a new era of leadership at Aligarh Muslim University.
