It is almost the end of May in Kashmir . The rivulets and brooks are gushing with water. The gardens are blooming with flowers with the birding darting about here and there. However, there is absence of proper sunlight as the sun comes out only upto 1 p.m. In some areas the citizens have not yet taken off their traditional Kashmiri cloaks normally worn in winter. Talking of the days of the yore, it has been widely reported in history books that during Afghan rule there was one year when there was no summer at all. It seems the year 2021 would also be remembered as the year without summer. What a contrast to the mainland Indian plains where the sun is burning with all intensity. Even though it is quite soothing to be walking the countryside or old city in such Sublime weather. However, the people who follow weather patterns seriously say that this kind of weather abnormality can do serious damage to our horticulture and our economy.

While there were days in 60s,70s and 80s when the refrigerators were mostly used for decoration purposes as the temperatures hardly touched 30 degrees celsius. We hope that 2016 is a one off year and the normal summers would be back in Kashmir soon. It is a serious case of global warming. Extreme weather is a direct consequence of global warming. Many regions across the world have witnessed extreme weather’s. Cold weather means more clothes, more heating arrangements and most importantly more expenses. We human beings in our greed to take up as much big piece of the environment as possible have left an unimaginable damage to the ecological balance.Forests have been cut down, trees uprooted, swamps and wetlands encroached upon. Now nature is slowly trying to reclaim what we took from it. Also, let us pray for some sunny days now.
