The residents of Narbal area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district are facing acute water shortage for last severel years owing to failure of Jal Shakti Department to complete the construction work of a water supply scheme in the area.
The residents of Moulvi Mohalla said that the authorities in the Jal Shakti department are pushing them to face hardships in these bone-chilling days.
“We are without drinking water for the past many years. We are being forced to consume the filthy water of the local Nallah. The stream has become a daily necessity for locals to meet their daily chores,” said Syed Zubair, a local resident.
Accusing the Jal Shakti officials for ignoring their plights, the residents here have demanded immediate redressal of their grievances.
Residents of the village said that since the area lacks piped water supply women have to travel long distances to collect water. “The women of every household have this duty to arrange the water for their families and have to travel long distances to get it,” Muzafar Ahmad, another local resident said. Adding the women of the area are facing extreme hardships in absence of piped water supply.
“The scheme to provide safe drinking water to the village was approved by the Government a few years back. However, the failure of the authorities to complete the scheme has left hundreds of people without drinking water. The overstretching of the project has aggravated the problem,” locas said.
The residents of the area lamented that the repeated assurances by the authorities have proved hollow and forced residents to travel long distances to mitigate the shortage.
The residents added that the concerned department has almost forgotten that the area exists. They urged the Lt Governor administration to direct the field staff to supply potable water to the locality.
Meanwhile, the residents appealed to the concerned authorities to ensure proper and immediate water supply to the area so that the water woes faced by the people are over.
