As the winter vacations have been declared for most of the classes in the Kashmir valley the students are making a beeline to various coaching centres and homes of private tutors to complete their winter assignments. A good number of well-heeled students will soon leave for Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Dubai to spend the winters while the vast majority of students just lay snuggled up in their homes after their tuition classes are over. This lazy sedentary behaviour becomes an intrinsic part of their personality and it takes a good entire month of March to make them wear off this inactive state of mind and body.
The harsh winters are not exclusive to Kashmir valley. There are numerous other places in the world where winter vacations are declared. However, the number of skills that students learn during these days makes them prepare for life once their schooling is over. Only the students fully confident of making it big in academics go for college and university studies. The remaining students learn life skills like carpentry, masonry, camping, swimming, horse riding, laundry and barbery. In winters the various social organisations get together to acquaint school going children with the basics of stock market trading, how to set up a company and crowdfunding too. Besides, the basic informal training on various blue-collared works is also given based on the preference of the students.
This wide spectrum of vocational courses helps shape the basic character of youth and they get a gauge of where to exercise their energies. During winters the children learn various trades and are ready to face the world once they leave the school. In our educational set up we encourage everyone to follow a preset hierarchy irrespective of their bent of mind – fits school, then college and the university. The result is that we have thousands of unskilled post graduates and doctorates who are not good for anything apart from being average academicians.
The civil society and the Non-governmental organisations must come forward to initiate various vocational courses for school going children during winters. It is the need of the hour and must be started as soon as possible. Let our students use the formal educational set up to learn academics but beyond that let us open opportunities for them so that they can earn a livelihood for themselves immediately after leaving school.
