A steady downslide, almost nearing extinction, can best describe the present scenario of the fourth estate in Jammu and Kashmir. The sagging health of Valley-based newspapers paints a grim picture, indicating that the day may not be far when the region’s once-vibrant print industry could become a chapter in history.
With limited circulation, rising printing costs, and dwindling private advertisements, the only lifeline keeping most local newspapers afloat remains government advertising support. However, the rates for these advertisements—last revised more than a decade ago—are now grossly outdated, offering little relief to publishers struggling to meet even basic operational costs.
Industry insiders say that despite repeated representations to the administration, there has been little movement on revising the rates. “Printing costs, newsprint prices, and even wages have multiplied over the years, but the advertisement rates remain frozen. It’s becoming impossible to sustain operations,” said the editor of a leading Srinagar-based daily.
Earlier this year, during a meeting with media representatives, Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha had assured that the issue would be addressed “sooner rather than later.” However, months have passed and the awaited revision is yet to materialize. Publishers fear that without urgent intervention, many smaller publications may be forced to shut down permanently.
Observers say that the weakening of local media has serious implications for democracy and accountability. The survival of independent journalism, they argue, depends on a fair and sustainable policy framework that allows newspapers to perform their role as the watchdogs of society.
For now, most Valley publications continue to struggle each morning to hit the stands — a fight for survival that symbolizes the slow fading of the region’s print voice.
