A nostalgic photograph has recently resurfaced from the depths of my old albums, offering a poignant glimpse into the past glory of Kashmir during the 1960s. This black-and-white gem captures a moment from the annual cultural festival held at SP College in Srinagar, where I had the honor of portraying ‘Bharat Mata’ or Mother India, selected by the esteemed college Cultural Committee. I distinctly recall Professor Shamsuddin Sahib from the Department of English, who served as the convener of the Committee and saw in me a resemblance fitting for the role of Bharat Mata.
In this treasured image, Bharat Mata stands adorned as the embodiment of our beloved nation, set against the majestic backdrop of the snow-capped Himalayas. As I reflect upon this snapshot, memories of my teenage years flood back. I must have been a student in my first year, or perhaps in the FA program, at that time. The Muslim students can be seen respectfully standing with joined palms, seeking blessings from the symbol of Mother India.
This rediscovered photograph evokes a torrent of emotions within me. It serves as a poignant reminder of a time in Kashmir when communal harmony and goodwill prevailed, untouched by the religious discord and division that has since marred the region. Those were truly different days, filled with unity and tolerance.
Needless to say that the sudden appearance of this photograph from my old collection has transported me back to the alleys of memory, filling me with joy. As I reminisce, I am reminded that I later pursued my Bachelor’s degree in 1960 from the same college, followed by a Master’s in Hindi from the University of Kashmir in 1962, where I proudly secured first-class first position.
Now, some six decades later, this photograph stands as a witness to a bygone era of unity and tolerance, increasingly rare in today’s conflict-torn Kashmir. As sectarian tensions escalate, precious images such as this offer a glimmer of hope that the spirit of mutual understanding and harmony can be reignited once more.
