A shocking incident unfolded at SMHS Hospital, shedding light on the perils of laparoscopy in Kashmir.

During a laparoscopic Whipple’s procedure, a patient lost her life, sparking concerns regarding the safety of such surgeries here. The patient (not named) was under the care of a supposed “laparoscopic surgeon” when complications arose.

Inside sources reveal a portal vein tear occurred during the laparoscopic procedure, a situation demanding cautious handling by experienced Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgeons. To the dismay of experts, the medical team attempted a risky laparoscopic approach to control the bleeding, a move met with criticism. “Efforts to halt the bleeding proved futile, leading to the patient’s rapid deterioration. Desperate, the medical team sought help from a Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon (CVTS) to repair the damaged portal vein,” sources said, adding that tragically, the patient’s transfer came too late, and she succumbed to the complications.

DAK President Dr Nisar ul Hassan when contacted, said, “Laparoscopic surgery is a modern technique that involves smaller incisions, which means less pain, and a quicker recovery compared to traditional OS. This innovative approach allows for a faster return to your normal activities, minimizing discomfort and helping you heal more comfortably. I believe it’s a great choice if a patient is in such situation.”

The DAK president further said that doctors can provide you with information about the procedure, potential risks, and address any questions patients may have, which can help alleviate their concerns before surgery. “I understand that considering surgery can be concerning. But It’s important to know that the success of this (Laparoscopic) surgery greatly depends on the expertise of the doctor performing such complex procedures. Rest assured, our medical team consists of skilled professionals experienced in laparoscopic techniques. Patients and well-being are doctors top priority. Trust in their expertise, and one can focus on recovery without worry,” he said.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked intense discussions in the medical community about laparoscopy’s appropriateness, particularly in intricate cases involving vital structures like the portal vein. Experts stress the significance of judicious decision-making and involving highly skilled specialists in such complex procedures.

In the aftermath, questions loom over the qualifications and training of the involved medical professionals, emphasizing the need for strict oversight and adherence to established protocols. An expert aptly stated, “When monkeys are encouraged, you can only expect a circus,” underscoring the vital need to maintain high standards in medical practice, preventing further loss of lives.
