Vehicular movement on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) was restored on Saturday after restoration agencies successfully removed landslide debris and falling rocks from several affected sites in the Ramban district. This re-established connectivity along the Kashmir Valley’s sole all-weather road link to the rest of the nation.
Officials reported that the highway was able to reopen for traffic thanks to sustained clearance efforts carried out after the recent spell of heavy rainfall. The de-silting and rock-removal operations were concentrated on sensitive stretches where mudslides and boulders had previously obstructed the thoroughfare.
As per the designated traffic plan, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs)—including private cars and passenger carriers—are currently permitted to operate in both directions between Jammu and Srinagar. Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) and other freight carriers, however, are being routed primarily from Udhampur towards Srinagar, with movement contingent upon favorable weather and stable road conditions.
The reopening has brought much-needed respite to hundreds of commuters and goods transporters who had been left stranded by the closure of this critical highway.
Authorities have confirmed that maintenance and restoration activities are actively continuing at high-risk locations to ensure safe passage and avert potential future blockades.
Motorists have been strongly advised to adhere to all traffic regulations and strictly follow directives issued by the traffic police during their journeys. Additionally, travelers are being urged to consult the latest traffic advisories before setting out, as unpredictable weather conditions may still pose risks at landslide-prone segments along the route.
