Despite the concerted efforts of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir continues to reel under an unprecedented crisis. The much-hyped revival measures and promotional drives have yielded little on the ground. Since the unfortunate Pahalgam incident earlier this year, the confidence of tourists has been shattered, and the region’s most vital economic lifeline lies gasping for breath.

Tourism has traditionally been the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, sustaining thousands of families directly and indirectly. From hoteliers to transporters, artisans to shopkeepers, all are struggling to make ends meet. The ripple effect of this downturn has pushed the local economy into a downward spiral, bringing it to one of its lowest points in recent memory.

While the administration has shown intent through roadshows and campaigns, intent alone cannot rebuild trust. What is missing is a coherent, on-ground execution strategy that ensures security, infrastructure development, and confidence-building among tourists. The government must realise that promotion without protection and stability is meaningless.
