Veteran Kashmiri journalist Sheikh Manzoor Ahmad has been appointed as the Bureau Chief of United News of India (UNI), following its recent takeover by The Statesman, one of India’s leading newspaper groups. As part of a major revamp, UNI is set to expand its news operations, upgrade its communication network, and modernize its software technology to stay competitive in the evolving media landscape.
Sheikh Manzoor Ahmad, who hails from Kashmir, has also been assigned the role of Consultant Editor (News). A seasoned journalist, he has previously served as a diplomatic correspondent, editor of the Urdu News Agency, and Chief of Bureau at the Kuwait News Agency. The new management is bringing in other senior media professionals to strengthen the agency’s editorial team.
Established in 1959, UNI is now being restructured to operate on a more professional basis. The management aims to enhance the credibility and reliability of its English, Hindi, and Urdu news services, ensuring comprehensive coverage of both domestic and international affairs. Plans are also underway to bolster UNI’s economic, sports, and photo services.
Vineet Gupta, Director of UNI, is spearheading the transformation efforts, emphasizing the need for innovative information-gathering techniques to deliver accurate and unbiased news. The goal is to re-establish UNI as a leading and professionally relevant news service provider in the country.
