Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) on Tuesday said it has arrested a radical social media user from Shalimar in Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district.
In a statement a spokesperson said, “CIK acting on credible intelligence and during the course of social media surveillance, a team successfully identified and apprehended an individual operating a radical Facebook account, Shaddy Kashmir Dryfruits, which was being used to disseminate extremist content aimed at disturbing peace. Following the intelligence input, a swift investigation led to the identification of the suspect as Showkat Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Ahmad Dar, a resident of Doodh Mohalla, Shalimar, Srinagar.”
The spokesperson further said that Showkat Ahmad Dar was actively engaged in posting and sharing content glorifying militancy and militant commanders while inciting anti-national sentiments among youth. “Efforts to track him were initially hindered due to his constant movement and change of location. However, a well-coordinated operation led to his apprehension along with his electronic device. A preliminary inspection of his digital devices revealed access to the radical Facebook account, as well as incriminating materials, including a video of slain terrorist commander Zakir Musa and other extremist propaganda.”
“Dar has a history of radical activities. He was previously arrested in 2019 by Harwan Police Station, Srinagar, for involvement in stone-pelting incidents. Additionally, in 2022, he was detained by Cyber Police Station, Srinagar, for spreading radical content online.”
“At the request of intelligence agencies in Jammu and Kashmir, social media service providers have established special monitoring units to track radical propaganda, particularly in the region. Whenever such activity is detected, it is immediately reported to security agencies,” statement added.
