Family of Sitram Yechury on Thursday donated his body to AIIMS for teaching and research purposes. A statement issued by AIIMS stated, “Shri Sitaram Yechury, aged 72, was admitted to AIIMS on 19th August 2024, with pneumonia and passed away on 12th September 2024 at 3:05 pm.
The family has donated his body to AIIMS, New Delhi, for teaching and research purposes.” The CPI(M) general secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP passed away on Thursday at the age of 72 after a long illness.
Yechury was hospitalised with a high fever on August 19 and later moved to the ICU. On August 31, the CPI(M) stated that he was being treated by a team of specialists for respiratory issues. The 72-year-old leader had also recently undergone cataract surgery. Despite his health struggles, Yechury remained active.
