The number of people with lifestyle diseases is increasing in the whole union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Diabetes, hypertension and other lifestyle-related diseases are wreaking havoc with the lifespan and general well-being of people. People often. Before we were reel-making idlers on Instagram we were actual workers. Almost every family had a kitchen garden of its own. People would manually draw up water from a well to irrigate kitchen gardens. The manual work associated with paddy fields was done by locals themselves without outsourcing it to outsiders. This rigorous work was both aerobic and anaerobic exercise, it was our gym and our cricket field. The concept of morning and evening walk to burn calories was unheard of as the daily chores involved rigorous work which entailed a lot of calories being burnt in the daily grind. Pounding rice and flour, mopping floor, fetching firewood and lighting fire to hamam were activities which were rigorous and helped in the mental as well as physical well being of Kashmiris across all districts. Times have changed. We now spend more time on social media then what we do in catering to the daily chores. None of us draws up water from a well. We do not go knee deep in our paddy fields and work for hours together. We desperately need to go back to our earlier lifestyle, eat a little less and work a little more. As of now our average lifespan which is decreasing by the day will start increasing once we part with our lazy habits. Exercise, home cooked food, more fruits and vegetables, less of junk food is the way to go. Wishing for a healthier Kashmir.
