There has been a tremendous increase in the number of people who have taken to smoking in Kashmir in the past two decades. The theme for this year is “We need food, not tobacco”. This day is observed to inform people about the risks related to tobacco and ways to quit it. Unfortunately, tobacco and other harmful substances are being widely used by people on a regular basis. From children to elderly persons, everyone is addicted to this harmful substance. Our country has the second largest tobacco users after China. In our valley, 35 percent of men and 5.1 percent of women consume tobacco in large quantities. Teenagers coming back from school, use tobacco without the knowledge of their parents. They spent their pocket money on buying substances. In case money is not available, they indulge in theft to meet their demands. Peer pressure and friends are the reason behind consuming tobacco. Children who don’t go to school are more likely to smoke. Youngsters buy cigarettes instead of fresh food. We see men smoking in public places and in sumos and buses which has a huge impact on other people. Furthermore, hospitals are full of cancer patients and heart disease is common in people of Jammu and Kashmir. Young men are dying of heart attacks due to the continuous use of tobacco. Their families have to face consequences later on. There are lots of tobacco users who called it quits but many are not ready to leave it. Depression, low self-esteem, divorce, negative feelings, etc are some reasons, why people are into tobacco. Youth requires proper counseling and willpower to say no to tobacco. Counselors must be appointed in educational institutions to eradicate this addiction. Many educational seminars and campaigns have been conducted in schools, colleges, and universities to make people aware of the use of tobacco. This year we expect more and more people to quit smoking and stay fit. Moreover, the World Health Organization is playing a significant role in fighting tobacco and ensuring a healthy lifestyle for the people of the world. Countries that are promoting tobacco must think deeply about the dangers associated with it. They must come forward to ban this harmful substance so that everyone stays in good health. People must avoid the consumption of dangerous substances and be inclined towards good food and physical activities. Tobacco must be shown a door in every nook and corner of the world to save our present and future generations.
