Police fire tear gas shells as Muharram mourners defy the government orders in Budgam

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday fired tear gas shells to prevent mourners from taking out a Muharram procession in Budgam, in violation of government orders banning the Muharram processions due to the COVID pandemic.

Restrictions were reportedly imposed  as a precautionary measure to regulate Muharram processions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The mourners according to police attempted to march towards the Imam Bada Budgam from Zorigund. Upon reaching nearby, they were stopped by the police and ordered to retreat.

“Security forces resorted by firing teargas shells after the procession tried to break the cordon,” a police official said.
