A few days ago, I had the privilege of leading the delegation of our political party, the All India Mahila Empowerment Party, on a visit to Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Our purpose was to gain insights into the unique challenges faced by the people of this region, particularly women and youth, in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. This visit was a heartfelt endeavor to connect with the aspirations of the people in this historically significant region. We scheduled conversations with the youth and other locals of the region across all parts of the valley. Through extensive consultations and engagements with local communities, we gained invaluable insights into the socio-economic dynamics, cultural nuances, and pressing needs of women, youth, and other residents.
In our discussions with the youth of Kashmir, we discovered a deep-seated desire among the youth to participate in the decision-making processes that shape their future actively. Many women we spoke with were eager to establish their own businesses or pursue higher education, yet they faced obstacles such as limited financial support and societal expectations. The need for empowerment programs that provide skills training and financial literacy was a recurring theme in our discussions. We also noted the rich cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir, which presents an opportunity for sustainable tourism that could provide further economic benefits while preserving the region’s traditions and environment. Engaging the local youth in such initiatives could foster a sense of pride and ownership and create new job prospects.
Our visit to various educational institutions in the region brought to light the eagerness of students to connect with the global community. They expressed a desire for exchange programs and international collaborations that could provide exposure to new ideas and educational practices. The potential for digital infrastructure improvements was also discussed, which could bridge the gap between remote areas and urban educational centers. In our meetings with local entrepreneurs, we learned about the innovative spirit driving the region’s youth. These young entrepreneurs are determined to contribute to the local economy. Their stories of perseverance and innovation were truly inspiring, and they highlighted the need for more supportive ecosystems that can nurture entrepreneurship. Environmental concerns were also a significant topic of conversation. The pristine beauty of Jammu & Kashmir is one of its most valuable assets, yet it faces threats from climate change. The youth showed a keen interest in environmental conservation and are looking for ways to promote eco-friendly tourism and sustainable development.
The cultural exchange programs were a topic of great interest among the youth. They voiced their enthusiasm for platforms that could showcase the rich traditions of Jammu & Kashmir to the world. The potential for cultural festivals that could attract international audiences was seen as a way to promote understanding and peace, as well as to stimulate the local economy.
Healthcare emerged as a critical concern in our dialogues. Access to quality healthcare services is limited in rural areas. The community expressed a need for better healthcare infrastructure. The women, in particular, emphasized the importance of maternal and child health services. The discussions also touched upon the region’s infrastructure. Improved infrastructure is also crucial for emergency services, which can be a matter of life and death in remote areas. The delegation was moved by the stories of resilience and hope that emanated from every corner of Jammu & Kashmir.
However, after extensive consultations and engagements with the people of Jammu & Kashmir, especially women and youth, the delegation of the All India Mahila Empowerment Party (AIMEP) has envisioned the concept of “Greater Kashmir.” This vision stems from the collective aspirations and insights gained during our visit to the region, where we listened to voices from all walks of Kashmiri life. The vision of “Greater Kashmir” embodies a holistic approach to address the multifaceted challenges faced by the region. It encompasses various dimensions, including socio-economic development, cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, healthcare accessibility, infrastructure enhancement, and international connectivity.
We envisage a future where the youth are empowered through increased employment opportunities and active participation in decision-making processes. We propose the establishment of innovative programs aimed at skill development, entrepreneurship support, and financial literacy, enabling the youth to contribute meaningfully to the local economy and governance. As we all know Education plays a pivotal role in realizing the potential of the youth. Our vision includes initiatives for educational exchange programs, international collaborations, and digital infrastructure improvements to ensure equitable access to quality education across urban and rural areas of Kashmir. By nurturing a globally connected generation, we aim to develop innovation, creativity, and critical thinking skills among Kashmiri youth.
Preserving the rich cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir is integral to the identity of the region. Our vision of “Greater Kashmir” emphasizes the promotion of cultural exchange programs, festivals, and tourism initiatives that showcase the diverse traditions and values of Kashmir to the world. By leveraging its cultural richness, Kashmir can attract international visitors, stimulate economic growth, and promote cross-cultural understanding and peace. We also advocate for sustainable development practices, eco-friendly tourism initiatives, and community-based conservation efforts to safeguard the region’s natural beauty and resources for future generations. By prioritizing environmental sustainability, Kashmir can mitigate the impacts of climate change and preserve its pristine landscapes. Healthcare is also a fundamental human right, and “Greater Kashmir” recognizes the need for improved healthcare infrastructure and services across the region. Our vision includes investments in healthcare facilities, training programs for medical professionals, and specialized maternal and child health services to address the healthcare needs of all Kashmiri residents, especially those in rural areas.
Infrastructure development is essential for enhancing the quality of life in Kashmir. “Greater Kashmir” envisions the construction of better roads, public transport systems, and connectivity networks to facilitate economic growth, improve access to essential services, and enhance emergency response capabilities, particularly in remote areas.
The vision of “Greater Kashmir” is not merely a distant dream but a practical roadmap that will address the long pending demands and aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. It is a vision of empowerment, progress, and harmony, where every individual, regardless of gender or background, has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the development of their community and nation. The vision ” Greater Kashmir ” aims to realize the full potential of the region and build a brighter, more prosperous future for all its residents. The All India Mahila Empowerment Party (AIMEP) holds the potential to transform Kashmir into what we envision as “Greater Kashmir.” This concept encompasses initiatives for socio-economic development, cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, healthcare accessibility, and infrastructure enhancement. As the Lok Sabha elections -2024 approach, the vision of “Greater Kashmir” offers hope and progress for the region. Voters in Jammu & Kashmir have the chance to support a future of empowerment, inclusivity, and sustainable development by endorsing this vision at the polls.
