The residents in Markipora village of north Kashmir’s Baramull district are facing scarcity of potable water for the past ten years.
The residents of Markipora, village of Pattan said that they are without potable drinking water for the past ten years and they are forced to consume filthy water of the local nallah.
The long walk to the stream has become a daily necessity, if villagers are to meet their daily chores and livelihood. The stream is their main source of water.
“Currently, our water supply pipeline is from Sultanpora, earlier, we were getting water from Nallah e Ferozpora pipeline supply, so here was no crisis over water supply,” said Adil Ahmad, a local resident.
“We usually rely on Nallah for water, which is unfit for human consumption. But we have no choice but to utilize and survive on this water,” he said.

Residents of the village said that womens have to travel long distances to collect water. “The women of every household have this duty to arrange the water for their families and have to travel long distances to get it,” Jalal Ud Din, another local resident said.
Out of 50 households, only three have their tube wells in the village. Others are awaiting the piped water supply facility,”Nazir Ahmad, another resident said.
However, the failure of the authorities to provide tap water supply has left thousands people without drinking water.
The residents added that officials of the concerned department have almost forgotten that the area exists. They urged the Governor administration to direct the field staff to supply potable water to the locality.
The residents appealed to the concerned authorities to ensure proper and immediate water supply to the area so that the water woes faced by the people will be over.
