No panic needed over LPG eKYC clarification

The recent clarification by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas should come as a relief to millions of LPG consumers who were worried about reports making the rounds on mandatory biometric Aadhaar authentication.
For many, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, the news had sparked confusion and anxiety, people feared that failing to complete eKYC could disrupt their gas supply. But the ministry has made it clear: there is no new rule making eKYC compulsory for everyone.
In reality, this is part of an ongoing process. Only those consumers who have not yet completed their eKYC need to do so. Those who have already done it earlier don’t have to repeat it.
For beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the requirement is even more relaxed. They only need to complete eKYC once in a financial year, and that too under specific conditions linked to subsidy benefits.
Most importantly, the ministry has reassured people that LPG supply will not be affected in any way. Cylinders will continue to be delivered as usual, putting to rest fears of disruption.
The larger aim behind eKYC is understandable, to ensure subsidies reach the right people and to weed out duplicate or fake connections. These are necessary steps to make the system more transparent and efficient.
However, the episode once again highlights how quickly misinformation can spread and create unnecessary panic. A lack of clear communication often leaves room for rumours to take over.
What’s needed going forward is better awareness and timely communication so that people are not left guessing or worrying about essential services.
For now, consumers can rest easy. There is no sudden change, no strict deadline looming, and certainly no threat to their LPG supply.
