One of Srinagar’s prime tourist attractions, the famous Nishat Garden along with the adjacent Dal Lake, has been plunged into darkness for the last ten days as the installed lights remain out of order. The blackout has left both local visitors and domestic tourists disappointed, especially when the evening sets in and the spot otherwise offers a breathtaking view.
Despite repeated complaints, the authorities appear unmoved. Engineers responsible for the upkeep of illumination in the area have reportedly adopted a “least bothered” approach, insisting that all is well. However, the ground reality tells a different story, with the garden and surrounding areas shrouded in darkness every evening.
When GMK contacted the Junior Engineer (JE) concerned to ask about the non-functioning lights, he reacted angrily, dismissing the query and even attempting to label the reporter a liar. His defiance, coupled with repeated complaints of rude behavior from the public, has sparked outrage among locals who say the official remains unaccountable and indifferent.
Tourists and residents alike have urged the administration to immediately intervene and restore lighting in Nishat, stressing that such negligence not only mars the city’s tourist image but also raises safety concerns after dusk.
