It’s indeed an unforgettable moment for India. Song ‘Naatu Naatu’ from SS Rajamouli directed movie ‘RRR’, won the best original song and ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ won best documentary short film Awards at Oscars 2023.
For the unversed, ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ is about the bond that develops between a couple and an orphaned baby elephant, Raghu, who was entrusted to their care.
The film is not just a heart-touching story of a bond between animal and human and co-existence, but also showcases Indian culture and tradition of environment conservation.
In her winning speech, Gonsalves said, “I stand here today to speak on the sacred bond between us and our natural world. For the respect of indigenous communities. For entity towards other living beings, we share our space with. And finally for co-existence. Thank you to the academy for recognizing our film highlighting indigenous people and animals. To Netflix for believing in the power of this film. To Guneet my Producer and my entire team and finally, to my mother father and sister who are up there somewhere, you’re the centre of my universe. To my motherland India.”
Anurag Thakur tweeted a poster of the film and wrote, “A heartwarming story of love and co-existence in harmony with nature; its a beautiful story of Bomman, Belli & baby elephant Raghu set in Tamil Nadu. Thrilled that Elephant Whisperers has bagged the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards ! Congrats!”
