A Muslim bride who insisted on being present during her Nikah at a mosque in Kerala has created a controversy on social media in the state.
“Both our families wanted my daughter Bahaja to witness her wedding along with us at the mosque,” Ummer reportedly said.
“It is high time that we discarded such practices that have no place in Islam. The brides, including my daughter, have the right to witness their wedding,” Ummer said.
The Nikah of Bahija Arlata with Fahad Qasim took place on July 30 in Paleri area of Parakkadvu, Kozhikode, Kerala. The Nikah was held in a mosque and was attended by the bride and her father in addition to several guests.
According to reports, Bahja is an MSW graduate, while Fahad is a civil engineer. She told her family that she did not want gold for marriage, but instead wanted to participate in her own Nikah.
Soon after the Nikah, pictures of the bride in the mosque surfaced on social media with many criticizing the mosque committee.
In a matter of days, a wedding, celebrated and celebrated by a family, turns into controversy.
“We sought permission [from the mosque committee that conducted the wedding] If the girl can sit on the spot. We have known all of them on the committee for years. The secretary gave us permission. There was no controversy or question at that time. Later, some people wrote praises about the wedding on Facebook, and some even made videos. That’s when the critical comments started appearing,” says the bride’s brother Fasil Shahjahan.
Local reports quoted Bahija as saying that her greatest blessing was to participate in the Nikah with her father and groom. Where is the justice in banning my presence at such a crucial moment, she reportedly asked.
