In a tragic incident in south Kashmir, both non-local workers who were shot at by terrorists in the Kellam area of Kulgam district have succumbed to their injuries, officials confirmed.
The victims have been identified as Deepak and Bhupinder, both residents of Chhattisgarh. They were working as labourers in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, when terrorists targeted them indiscriminately.
According to officials, the duo was fired upon by terrorists on Friday evening. Both were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where one of them, Deepak had succumbed to his injuries. The second worker, Bhupinder, who had been shifted to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Anantnag for advanced treatment, also breathed his last despite doctors’ efforts, official sources said.
The bodies of both victims have been retrieved and are being prepared for their final journey to Chhattisgarh, where authorities have been informed to facilitate the handover to their families.
Following the attack, security forces, including the army, CRPF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police, had cordoned off the Kellam area and launched a massive search operation to track down the assailants. The search operation is still underway, with security personnel conducting door-to-door searches in the vicinity.
“We are working on multiple leads. The attackers will not be spared,” a senior police officer stated.
The killing of the two migrant workers has drawn widespread condemnation, with political leaders and civil society groups expressing grief over the incident. This marks the latest in a series of targeted attacks on non-local labourers in the valley, raising fresh concerns over the safety of migrant workers from other states.
