Kashmiri people by nature are sports-loving people. Wrestling, Kabaddi, and football were the sports our grandfathers played with great enthusiasm. In football, we produced stalwarts like Abdul Majeed Kakroo, Yousuf Dar, Mehrajjuddin Waddoo, and Ashfaq Ahmad. In cricket we have produced half a dozen players who made it to Indian Premier League (IPL) and a couple of players who made it to the international team. Kashmiris listen to radio commentary on radio with an unrivaled zeal or with the same enthusiasm and energy to watch cricket and football matches on television. It is a city well-educated in sports culture. Almost every other soul on the street knows the basic rules of football and cricket. Our youth has excelled in various martial arts in the last decade earning scores of national and international awards. The last biggest sports tournament Kashmir witnessed was when Kashmir hosted the inter-state level football tournament Santosh trophy some fifteen years ago. It is sometimes beyond belief to note that since the last forty-odd years Kashmir has not hosted a single International cricket match. Let that sink in – not even a single match. For such a sports-loving valley this is a metric they would like to change desperately. Kashmiris deserve a chance to see international cricket players play at a stadium in Srinagar. This will go a long way to boost tourism in Kashmir. We have one of the most picturesque stadium in the world and a population totally mad about sports. Kashmir deserves an international cricket match on its soil. That could be a great signifier of the improved socio-economic condition of Kashmir. The present government dispensation needs to make efforts towards this end.
