Kashmir tourism: Resilience, revival and renewed hope

Kashmir’s tourism sector is once again demonstrating its remarkable resilience, reaffirming the Valley’s timeless appeal and its deep-rooted bond with visitors. After nearly a year of uncertainty and rough weather,  both natural and perceptual, the sector is showing clear signs of revival, bringing much-needed relief to thousands of families whose livelihoods depend on tourism.
The return of snowfall, coupled with improved confidence and sustained efforts by all stakeholders, has helped restore momentum. The observations of Director of Tourism, Kashmir, Syed Qamar Sajad reflect a cautious yet well-founded optimism. The recovery in tourist footfall to near-normal levels is not merely a statistic; it is a strong endorsement of Kashmir’s inherent strength as a destination that continues to draw people despite challenges.

The tourism department, hoteliers, transporters and local service providers have worked in unison to rebuild trust through consistent hospitality, improved services and a focus on safety. At the same time, a gradual improvement in perceptions about stability has played a crucial role in influencing travel decisions.
Nature has also lent a helping hand. Fresh snowfall in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg has not only restored Kashmir’s winter magic but also lifted the mood of hesitant travellers. Snow, once again, has acted as the Valley’s silent ambassador, showcasing its unmatched charm to the outside world.
Perhaps the most pleasant and symbolic surprise is the renewed footfall in Pahalgam—where the downturn had earlier cast its longest shadow.
