Kashmir Sikh Sangat Holds Annual Convention in Jammu, Advocates for Community Issues

The Kashmir Sikh Sangat, an organization representing Kashmiri Sikhs residing in Jammu, held its annual convention at the Abhinav Theatre Wednesday. The event, supported by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages, brought together prominent figures from various sectors to discuss pressing community and societal concerns.

A significant address at the convention was delivered by Advocate Neetu Kaur Bali, who highlighted the vital role of women in society. Quoting Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Ji’s words, “So kyu manda aakhiye, jit jamme rajaan” (Why consider her inferior, from whom kings are born), she emphasized the respected status of women in Sikh philosophy.

Advocate Bali also drew attention to key issues facing the Sikh community, urging concerted efforts for their resolution. Her primary appeals included, Official Language Status for Punjabi: Advocate Bali called for Punjabi to be officially recognized in Jammu and Kashmir, acknowledging its cultural and historical significance, Inclusion under SRO 412: She pressed for the inclusion of Kashmiri Sikhs under the purview of SRO 412 to ensure their welfare and address their specific needs, Establishment of Minority Commission: Emphasizing the protection of minority rights, she urged the government to expedite the formation of a Minority Commission in Jammu and Kashmir, and recruitment of Punjabi Educators: To preserve the Punjabi language, Advocate Bali stressed the need for the recruitment of qualified teachers, lecturers, and professors at schools, higher secondary institutions, and colleges.

The convention was honored by the presence of Lieutenant General (Retd.) R.S. Reen as the chief guest, and Smt. Harvinder Kaur (JKAS) as the guest of honor. Key members of the Kashmir Sikh Sangat, including President Karamjeet Singh, General Secretary Suraj Singh, and Publicity Secretary Balbir Singh, facilitated the proceedings.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions across various fields, several distinguished individuals were felicitated during the event, reflecting the community’s appreciation for their dedication and achievements.

The Kashmir Sikh Sangat’s annual convention served as a vital platform for the community to express its concerns and aspirations. The discussions and resolutions are expected to guide the organization’s future efforts in advocating for the welfare and progress of the Sikh community in Jammu and Kashmir.
