Notwithstanding the widespread installation of smart meters in various parts of Kashmir, residents are grappling with dismal power supply as winter sets in. The assurances and promises made by authorities for an improved power supply during this winter season seem to be a distant dream for the people of Kashmir.
Despite the technological advancements brought about by smart meters, the harsh winter conditions continue to disrupt the region’s power supply. Many residents, especially in rural areas, are facing prolonged power outages, causing significant inconvenience in their daily lives.
Local resident, Peer Ajaz expressed his frustration, “We were hopeful that with the installation of smart meters, our electricity supply issues would be resolved. However, every winter, we find ourselves in the same predicament, struggling to keep warm and manage our daily tasks without electricity.”
Officials from the power department cited various challenges, including reduced water discharges in River Jhelum and River Chenab, affecting hydropower generation, and decreased purchases of power from outside power generation companies (Gencos).
“We understand the difficulties faced by the people. But, due to the prolonged dry season, the water bodies are dry and we are unable to generate adequate power supply,” said an official from Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL).
“Currently the demand is 1600 Megawatts in the Valley but we are able to produce 1000 MW only. If the situation remains the same, this winter will be very difficult,” he said.
The residents are expressing their frustration and dissatisfaction with the frequent power cuts in the region.
“The unscheduled power cuts are taking a toll on students, patients and the business community,” said Aadil Ahmad, a resident of Bemina.
“Even if we clear the electricity bills timely, we don’t get the adequate power supply,” he added.
Despite these reassurances, the situation remains dire for many Kashmiris, especially those in economically disadvantaged communities. They continue to endure the biting cold without adequate heating and lighting, highlighting the urgency for a more effective and sustainable solution to the region’s perennial power supply problems.
As winter tightens its grip on Kashmir, residents hope for swift action from the authorities to fulfill the promises made and alleviate their struggles in the face of the persistent power crisis.
