With the new moon in horizon the fasting month of Ramzan begins in Kashmir from today.
Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Nasir Ul Islam announced the sighting of the moon moments after reports of moon sightings were announced across the region.
“The moon marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan has been sighted. The holy month will begin from April 03,” Mufti Nasir said. He said that the first Tarwih prayers will be offered tonight (Saturday).
Mufi Nasir urged people of Kashmir to pray for peace and prosperity of Valley and to spend time in seeking repentance for sins and freedom from hellfire from Almighty Allah in the blessed month of Ramzan.
Devout Muslims will follow a new routine for the next 30 days, shunning all intake of food and water from sunrise to sunset every day.
Muslims across the world follow the Lunar calendar and each month starts with sighting of the crescent.
The fasting month — which can be of 29 or 30 days — will end with the sighting of Eid moon.
The markets across Kashmir have been flooded with several varieties of dates which are used to break the fast every evening.
