It pains to see Kashmiris candidates running from pillar to post in search of job in Indian metropolitan cities whereas their mainland Indian counterparts get the desired jobs despite being less qualified. It is said that Kashmiris possess one of the most fertile brains and have a scholarly bent of mind. However, lack of proper counseling and guidance mars the career prospects of Kashmiris students and they end up being unemployed despite possessing higher qualification and requisite skills. Take the case of our University of Kashmir. Being the solitary university of repute in Kashmir division it attracts the best of brains. However, at the end of the academic calendar the students are left to fend for themselves with no help from the administration. There is a namesake counseling cell but it is not able to translate the investment the government has put into it into substantial jobs for the fresh pass outs. Occasionally, a few seminars are conducted just to give an impression that something is happening on the counseling part but in reality campus placements are far and few in between.

The main job of a counseling cell is not placement. It is to make the candidates employable. Sometime back, the UDAAN program was devised by the central government. The main objective of the program was to make the educated youth of the state employable in the vast sea of corporate offices across Indian metropolitan cities. Though the program failed in its objective, but one has to agree that the direction was right.
The need of the hour is to train the fresh pass outs in communicative English, corporate ethics, and corporate communication, writing official emails and facing interviews. All this can be covered hardly in ten sessions. Our counseling cells hardly bother to give such training and just coordinate with a few low profile human resource to hire the fresh pass outs for the entry level jobs. All this is done without gauging the interest of the candidates. It pains to see Kashmiris candidates running from pillar to post in search of job in Indian metropolitan cities whereas their mainland Indian counterparts get the desired jobs despite being less qualified. It is all about soft skills training. The university of Kashmir and other universities in the UT must hire professional soft skills trainers to make their products employable in the vast sea of corporate offices in India.
