Infrastructure for an expanding city

Urban spaces are expanding day by day across India. More and more people are relocating towards cities for better employment prospects and a good quality of life. This migration towards cities which had halted during the years impacted by Covid-19 has restarted with full enthusiasm. This full-blown migration is putting tremendous pressure on cities across India. Let us take an example of Bengaluru. It was designed meticulously by town planners for a population that may have someday gone up to thirty lakh people. Today one crore thirty lakh people live in Bengaluru giving sleepless nights to city planners. Let us take another example of Srinagar city. Currently, the population of Srinagar city is estimated to be around 17 lakh souls. We are not talking about areas that are on paper on the fringes of Srinagar but for all practical purposes part of Srinagar. Also to be taken into account is the vast rural population which temporarily migrates to the only city in Kashmir valley for better quality of education, healthcare, and other government institutions of quality and repute. All this is putting tremendous strain on the current infrastructure and there is a lot that needs to be done to ensure that the infrastructure does not cripple when city touches a population of three million souls in another few years. Healthcare, transport, water supply, and Education are some of the sectors where a massive infrastructural overhaul is required. We have to pre-empt a few things before it is too late. The current infrastructure of the city is good and the government is doing all it can to uplift it but the coming times may be difficult. We have to go beyond the call of duty to ensure that every single soul in city in that hour of future is provided the best possible infrastructure in terms of healthcare, education, and transport.
