UN: India has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for a two-year term, following an election where the 1.3 billion-strong nation secured 184 votes out of the 193-member General Assembly. Mexico, Norway and Ireland have also been inducted into the Security Council.
India has claimed one of the five seats available to African and Asian states. Its candidature was unanimously endorsed by the 55-nation Asia Pacific Group at the United Nations Security Council in June last year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply grateful to member nations for extending their support to India. “India will work with all member countries to promote global peace, security, resilience and equity,” he tweeted.
