There has been an increase of knife attacks in Srinagar of late. Nephew stabbing an uncle over a dispute in the downtown part of Srinagar, a husband stabbing to death his wife in central Kashmir and cases of this nature are becoming the staple of front pages of our newspapers.
The intensity of these crimes and the motive behind it has a huge intensity gap. Sometimes complete strangers stab each other over a wrong parking spot, brushing against each other’s cars inadvertently, ogling at each other and things likewise. Issues that can be solved easily over a cup of coffee are being solved by a game of duel in which the person who clutches the knife first is declared a winner.
A few years ago, it was the teenagers stabbing each other but this March we have seen middle-aged people resorting to violence of this nature. The materialism brought in the western world has wreaked havoc with our culture and social ethos. The hip hop culture of the 90s trampled over whatever was left of the oriental ethos. Then came the social media and the reels. People just want to be more and more popular without putting in any special effort. People want to gain fame and money and show off the same to an agnostic audience with tireless redundancy.
It is amazing that people now want to impress the strangers on Instagram, Facebook, and twitter but at the same time are happy with the resulting disconnect with their immediate family members and friends. Things have reached such an extent that if a person is bullied by some strange person on social media the affected person even goes to the extent of making an attempt on his/her life. Imagine how many people have died because a random stranger talked bad about them online.
The knifing incidents must be thoroughly investigated by the relevant authorities and strict punishment meted out to perpetrators. Making an attempt on someone’s life should be given the harshest possible punishment so that no one else dares to repeat the crime. Knifing someone with an intention to kill the person is a serious crime against humanity and must be dealt with seriously.
