Winter in Kashmir doesn’t arrive with empty hands. It brings in common cold, coughs, sinusitis, strokes, and heart attacks which can be life-threatening. Alas! cold weather is likely to trigger heart attacks twice as compared to the summer season. It is unfortunate that there has been a rampant rise in heart attacks among youngsters in the valley.Around 6-7 people died of heart attacks in the last three days which is quite shocking. The reason for sudden heart attacks in winter is that the body loses more heat than it generates, and the blood thickens due to unbearable cold causing blood vessels to contract. This further leads to sudden heart attacks and strokes. Apart from extreme cold conditions, unhealthy lifestyle, lack of exercise, hypertension and family history are some factors why people die of heart disease. Smokers have double the chances of getting heart attack than nonsmokers. Moreover vaping is a trend among young adults and teenagers in the valley which is bad for lung and heart health. According to the doctors in Kashmir, the deficiency of vitamin D also increases the risk of heart disease in the winter season. Doctors have advised people to stay warm but people are not following proper guidelines. Recently also a video went viral in which an adult had a sudden cardiac arrest. The man had not even covered his head properly but he swallowed pills and his life was finally saved. It seems that people are less concerned about their health We have observed countless people without woolen caps. Elderly people need to be more cautious and must stay inside their homes as they have higher chances of cardiac arrest and stroke in cold. In the winter season, it is important for people to cover themselves to stay warm. People only pretend to be warm but in reality, they don’t take the winter season seriously. Their hands and feet keep on freezing but they don’t bother to warm themselves. Parents need to be more careful while sending kids to tuition centers. Children must be kept warm so that they remain safe. In the winter season, indoor warm-up exercises and home workouts increase blood circulation which can prevent future cardiac arrests. In Kashmir, people eat fried and fatty foods in winter which increases the risk of heart attacks. People who have a history of cardiovascular diseases should go for regular weekly checkups. Winter season must be enjoyed with enthusiasm but at the same time, we must take good care of our life.
