The scenes today at various traffic junctions in Kashmir districts are self-explanatory. People are itching to leave their homes despite the lockdown measures being in place. There was a literal traffic jam at a lot of places in Srinagar. Why this hurry? What is more important than life and security that these people want to achieve? Why dodge lockdown measures to press our own petty agenda to meet friends and relatives for a casual chat in the middle of a pandemic?
Kashmir valley with a population of 8 million people has about the same number of cases as the entire state of Karnataka with a population of about 80 million people. Having a strong number of people working in foreign lands Kashmir always needed to be extra careful. A point in case is the low number of cases in Jammu. Jammu is economically on s higher turf as compared to Kashmir but the chunk of population which is working in foreign lands is quite low in Jammu.
It is amazing how people so cunningly hid travel history in Kashmir and asymptomatically ended up spreading virus to scores of other people. Once things are back to normal one would demand a strong cases against these people. For the time being containing virus should be the top priority.
The cases are increasing in Kashmir and that too at a time when government is bring people back home who got stranded in other states of India. Special trains are leaving from Karnataka and Goa with fewer stops enroute to Udhampur. Once the citizens reach Udhampur we expect them to be quarantined for a good period of time.
As we have said before, the limited healthcare system we have we cannot afford so many number of cases. May good sense prevail.
