In ancient books of history Kashmir was known as the land of honey, saffron and grapes. The quality of Kashmiri honey was famous worldwide due to the wide variety of flowers bees derive their honey from during spring and summer months. However, during winters honey production would come to a halt in sub-zero temperatures. The bee-keepers from Kashmir have found a solution – they head to comparatively warmer places like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana to continue honey harvesting during winter months.
The state’s flowering crops, such as mustard, sunflower, and various indigenous desert flora, offer a rich source of nectar for bees even during the winter months. This continuous supply of nectar ensures that the bees remain active and honey production remains steady.
We must appreciate the hard work of these young men. We impress upon the government to give full support to these young men and help them in this endeavour. Honey production is in itself a cottage entrepreneurship. If institutes like Employment Development Institute (EDI) can help start up travel agencies, services sector start ups with higher risks of failure than what is wrong in supporting initiatives like these with almost hundred percent chances of success. Growing organic honey away from home during winter months is an endeavour that can help generate employment in a great way.
We impress upon the government to provide full guidance to these youth. At the same time other prospective bee-keepers who are reluctant to take up bee-keeping due to lean Return Over Interest (ROI) during winter months must be made aware about how they can earn substantial profit even during winter months. This can help overcome unemployment like anything.
The fact remains that it is tourism and agriculture which are the mainstay of our economy. Any disruptive innovation which increases the ROI of an Agri-entrepreneur must be highlighted through local press so that others get impressed with it and start venturing for it. We need more and more youth to take up these innovative initiatives rather than waiting for years as an idler to get a government job.
