In the midst of ongoing parliamentary elections, concerns over the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have surfaced, primarily fueled by rumors and misinformation. However, it’s crucial to shed light on the meticulous processes and safeguards that uphold the sanctity of our electoral system.
As someone who has served as a presiding officer/zonal magistrate, I can attest to the stringent rules and regulations,as laid down by the Election Commission, governing our electoral processes. Election officials viz Polling Officers and Presiding Officers undergo thorough training sessions conducted by senior officers to ensure a clear understanding of their responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on maintaining secrecy and adhering strictly to established protocols.
One of the common misconceptions pertains to the security of EVMs, particularly regarding potential tampering. It’s essential to debunk these rumors by understanding the robust measures taken to safeguard the integrity of the voting process. Before polling begins, each EVM and Control Unit undergoes a comprehensive sealing process, including multiple layers of seals and unique identification numbers. These seals are verified by party agents and presiding officers to ensure transparency and prevent any tampering attempts.
Furthermore, during the counting process, stringent protocols are followed to verify the integrity of the EVMs. Party agents are present throughout, meticulously cross-checking the seals and signatures before the EVMs are opened for counting. Any discrepancies are immediately addressed, and counting proceeds only after all parties are satisfied with the integrity of the process.
It’s important to refrain from spreading baseless rumors and misinformation that undermine the credibility of our electoral system. Such actions only serve to erode public trust and create unnecessary doubts. Instead, let us reaffirm our commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring free and fair elections.
In conclusion, allegations of tampering with EVMs are not only unfounded but also detrimental to the democratic fabric of our nation. By understanding the rigorous safeguards in place and promoting factual information, we can safeguard the integrity of our electoral process and uphold the principles of democracy.
