In a valiant operation against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, Major Pradeep R Tathawade made the supreme sacrifice while leading his troops on June 17 (2000). The encounter took place in Shahpur village, where the Army had received intelligence about the presence of heavily armed terrorists.
Major Tathawade, who was officiating as the Commanding Officer of his battalion, decided to lead the operation personally. Upon reaching the location, the troops were met with heavy gunfire from the terrorists. Undeterred, Major Tathawade led the assault and managed to corner the insurgents.
During the intense exchange of fire, Major Tathawade noticed two terrorists attempting to escape. Displaying exceptional courage, he swiftly engaged and neutralized both. However, a third terrorist launched a surprise attack, injuring Major Tathawade. Despite suffering severe gunshot wounds to his stomach and thigh, he fought back and eliminated the attacker in close combat.
Even as he bled profusely, Major Tathawade continued to lead his troops, ensuring that the operation was successful. Only after the terrorists were neutralized did he allow himself to be evacuated. He was rushed to a nearby military hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Major Pradeep R Tathawade’s bravery and leadership have been lauded across the nation. He is survived by his wife, Leenta Tathawade, daughter Bhagyashree, and son Sagar.
