At just 16 years old, Tauseef Ashraf from Qasbayar, Pulwama, is making waves in the world of sports. A prodigy in multiple disciplines, including floorball, modern pentathlon, and bandy, Tauseef has earned a remarkable tally of 18 gold, 25 silver, and 12 bronze medals in national, state, and district-level championships. Not only is he a talented athlete, but he is also the founder of two sports academies where he coaches and mentors over 50 young athletes, helping many of them achieve success at state and national levels. His passion for sports and his dedication to nurturing young talent are reshaping the athletic landscape in his hometown and beyond.
Tauseef, born and raised in Qasbayar, a small village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama. From an early age, he exhibited a natural flair for sports, and his journey began when he first participated in district-level sports competitions. As a young boy, Tauseef quickly gained attention for his agility, stamina, and tactical acumen in a variety of sports, particularly in floorball, bandy, and modern pentathlon. His passion for sports was evident to everyone who knew him, and his determination set him apart from other children in his community.
His early success fueled his desire to explore new horizons in the world of sports, and it wasn’t long before he began to emerge as a serious competitor in state and national-level competitions. “Tauseef has always been an exceptional talent. He was naturally gifted, but what really set him apart was his dedication to improving himself,” says one of his early mentors, Arshid Ayoub Lone, a teacher at Govt Model Higher Secondary School, Rajpora, Pulwama.
Tauseef’s achievements are as remarkable as they are diverse. To date, he has won an impressive total of 18 gold, 25 silver, and 12 bronze medals in various championships at the national, state, and district levels. His versatility as an athlete is evident from his participation in multiple sports, particularly floorball, modern pentathlon, and bandy.
Among his many accolades, Tauseef’s participation in the Floorball National Championships in Tamil Nadu, Haryana, and Chennai stands out. He represented Jammu and Kashmir in these tournaments, showcasing his talent on a national platform. His tenacity and skill earned him medals in these events, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most promising young athletes from the region.
Tauseef’s achievements in modern pentathlon—a demanding sport that combines fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, pistol shooting, and cross-country running—are even more noteworthy. He is the first player from Jammu and Kashmir to participate in the Modern Pentathlon National Championship held in Maharashtra. His entry into this prestigious competition opened doors for other young athletes from the state, inspiring them to venture into sports that were previously unfamiliar in the region.
However, it was in the National Bandy Championship where Tauseef truly left his mark. As a gold medalist in this sport, he demonstrated exceptional proficiency in a game that combines elements of both ice hockey and field hockey. His victory was celebrated across the region, and he became a symbol of youthful talent in Jammu and Kashmir.
While Tauseef’s personal achievements are extraordinary, his vision extends beyond his individual success. Driven by a desire to give back to his community and help young athletes like himself, he founded the Tawseef Ashraf Floorball Academy and the Sadaat National Sports Club. Both of these institutions have become essential hubs for sports training and development in Pulwama, offering young athletes the opportunity to train under Tauseef’s guidance.
The establishment of these academies was no small feat, especially for a teenager still balancing his own training and education. However, Tauseef’s determination to provide a platform for budding athletes in his community was unwavering. With support from local authorities, including the District Administration of Pulwama and his alma mater, Govt Model Higher Secondary School, Rajpora, Tauseef has successfully coached over 50 young athletes, many of whom have gone on to excel at national and state levels.
“It was always my dream to create a space where young athletes could come together and train, regardless of their background or financial status,” Tauseef shares. “I believe that sports have the power to change lives, and I wanted to give others the chance to experience that transformation.”
Through his academies, Tauseef has produced 20 players who have already made a name for themselves in national and state championships. His role as a coach for the Under-14 J&K Floorball Team has also been pivotal, as he has helped shape the skills and sportsmanship of young athletes who aspire to reach the same heights he has achieved.
Tauseef’s journey to success has not been one he traveled alone. He has been fortunate to receive the support of several key figures and organizations in his community. Social activist Mudasir Dar has been instrumental in providing Tauseef with the resources and encouragement needed to further his ambitions. His advocacy for the development of sports in Jammu and Kashmir has created opportunities for many athletes like Tauseef to participate in national competitions and gain exposure.
Additionally, Sajjad Ahmad Dar, a coach under the Khelo India initiative, has been a mentor to Tauseef, offering invaluable advice and guidance as he navigated the challenges of being both an athlete and a coach at such a young age. Tauseef’s schoolteachers, particularly Ab Rashid Thakur and Arshid Ayoub Lone, also played significant roles in his development, encouraging him to pursue his passion for sports even when it meant balancing his studies and rigorous training schedules.
“I’ve had so many people supporting me along the way, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them,” Tauseef says. “From my teachers to my friends and family, everyone has played a part in helping me achieve my goals.”
Like many athletes from Jammu and Kashmir, Tauseef’s journey has not been without its challenges. Limited infrastructure, financial constraints, and the socio-political situation in the region have all posed significant hurdles. However, Tauseef’s resolve has remained unshaken, and he has worked tirelessly to overcome these obstacles.
“There were times when it felt like everything was against me,” Tauseef admits. “But I knew that if I wanted to succeed, I had to keep pushing forward. Sports taught me discipline and perseverance, and that’s what kept me going even when things were tough.”
Despite these difficulties, Tauseef’s dedication to his sport has inspired many in his community. His success is a testament to the fact that with the right mindset and support system, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome. Tauseef’s impact extends beyond his own achievements and the athletes he coaches. He has become a role model for young people in Pulwama, proving that success is possible even in a region that faces significant adversity. His story has been a source of motivation for many, and he is now seen as a symbol of hope for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.
Tauseef’s commitment to sports and his community has garnered widespread recognition. His academies continue to grow, and he remains dedicated to improving the quality of sports training in the region. “I want to help more kids discover their potential through sports. I know how much it changed my life, and I want others to have that same opportunity,” he says.
With plans to expand his academy and bring more resources to the athletes under his care, Tauseef’s future looks bright. He dreams of one day representing India on the international stage and bringing glory to his homeland.
Tauseef’s journey is a shining example of how one individual’s passion and determination can create a ripple effect, transforming not only their own life but also the lives of those around them. At just 16 years old, Tauseef has already accomplished more than many athletes twice his age, and his story is far from over.
As he continues to break barriers and set new benchmarks in his sports career, Tauseef remains focused on his ultimate goal: to inspire the next generation of athletes from Jammu and Kashmir and to show the world that even in the face of adversity, success is possible.
In a place where opportunities are often limited, Tauseef Ashraf stands as a beacon of hope, proving that with hard work, dedication, and a strong support system, dreams can indeed become a reality.
