Many residents complained about lack of traffic management in Srinagar causing frequent traffic jams on roads. They pointed out Qamarwari to Batamaloo saying the road faces chronic traffic jams on a daily basis.

Traffic jams during peak hours are witnessed on vital routes including Lal Chowk-Jahangir chowk, Qamarwari and Dalgate route has become a norm.

“Frequent traffic jams signify the failure of authorities to streamline the system as not a single traffic cop deployed to streamline the traffic during evening hours here,” Mansoor Ahmad, a daily commuter at Jehangir Chowk route alleged. He said that every evening he has to waste hours in traffic jam to cover the distance which otherwise is covered within 10 minutes.

In addition to the slow pace, the locals complained of overcrowded buses resulting in the harassment of the female folk who have long complained of sexual harassment in public transport.

Passengers say buses are overcrowded to such an extent that there is no space left to move around.

Another commuter, Ashiq Ellahi said that following road projects in Bemina Bypass, vehicles move slowly which further creates a traffic mess in the area.

“We are already suffering due to road closures and diversions following road project here in Bemina. We cannot move freely due to dust on the roads and the condition becomes worse during the rainy season,” he said.

Good Morning Kashmir did a series of stories on the issue. Officials from the Traffic Department said that they are addressing the issue and soon the situation will be better.
