There has been an increase in the number of eve teasing incidents in Srinagar and other places in Kashmir Valley. Even though the number of reported cases is quite low but it does not mean that it is not happening. It is happening and happening right in front of our eyes.
The latest trend of road Romeos has been to fling paper chits at girls. Sometimes these urchins bring their lavish cars to a screeching halt right in front of the group of girls to show off their driving skills. In Baghat area, the hipster youth ride their bikes at ridiculously high speeds and amidst the drone of their bikes they pass on any comment at will.
Some years ago a teenage girl died after a spoiled brat rammed his car into her. The incident triggered a series of debates as to why parents are giving way too much money and freedom to their wards.

The law enforcement agencies seem to be missing on these spots and if any boy is caught passing lewd remarks on girls he is immediately let go free with a mild warning. Despite the pressure from various sections of civil society the police presence is next to nothing.
The problem of eve teasing should not exist in a place like Kashmir where religious discourse is the dominant discourse. We as a society need to take strict measures to ensure our girls are safe on the roads. Besides, police surveillance should increase in areas which have witnessed eve teasing in the past.
