Member of Parliament from Baramulla, Er. Abdul Rashid Sheikh (Er. Rasheed), has formally nominated noted Kashmiri literary figure Late Abdul Ghani Baig Athar for the Padma Bhushan Award 2027 posthumously, recognising his exceptional contribution to the promotion and preservation of the Kashmiri language and literature.
In a statement issued here, the spokesperson said that, Firdous Baba, PA/PS to the MP, Er. Rasheed submitted the nomination in recognition of Baig Athar’s lifelong dedication to enriching Kashmiri literature and safeguarding the region’s linguistic heritage.
The spokesperson said that Er. Rasheed, himself a columnist, holds deep respect for the writers and poets of Kashmir and believes that the late Abdul Ghani Baig Athar made an extraordinary contribution to the literary and cultural landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. His writings reflected the richness of the Kashmiri language, while his efforts in mentoring young writers and poets helped nurture a new generation of literary talent.
Baba as per the party spokesperson said that, Baig Athar’s contribution extended beyond his own literary works, as he remained a guiding force for aspiring writers, encouraging them to preserve and strengthen Kashmir’s literary traditions. He added that his lifelong service to literature and education deserves the country’s highest recognition.
“Conferring the Padma Bhushan on the late literary icon would be a fitting tribute to his enduring legacy and inspire future generations to promote and protect the Kashmiri language,” Baba was quoted as saying by party spokesperson.
The statement added that the initiative taken by MP Er. Rasheed has been widely appreciated by several social and literary organisations across Jammu and Kashmir.
