Despite various government schemes for power development in rural areas transmission lines hanging on trees depict the sorry state of power infrastructure in Eidgah Mohalla Khag area of Central Kashmir’s Budgam district.
The residents said that they were living under constant threat due to low-lying transmission lines, which according to them, were tied to tree branches at several places in the area.
“The transmission lines can be seen hanging from the tree branches, and the department concerned is taking no steps to align the electricity wires on the electric poles,” the residents said. Adding the transmission lines are posing a severe danger to the lives of people of the area.
“It shows the callous attitude of the PDD authorities on the ground. Most of the wooden poles installed in the area decades ago were damaged and instead of installing new iron poles, PDD officials choose to hang wires on trees,” they rued.
The residents also complained that the electric wires were broken at various places in the area. “These wires have been joined temporarily and the fast moving wind can break them up,” the residents said.
Locals said that the department has failed to replace to align transmission lines on the electric poles despite several requests.
“We made repeated requests to the PDD officials seeking alignment of transmission lines on the electric poles, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” Waseem said.
“With the wires lying low on these trees, anything untoward can happen and the onus will lie on the PDD,” said Ghulam Mohd Shah, a local resident of Eidgah Mohalla.
The residents sought the intervention of Chief Engineer PDD in this regard.
